1905 Philadelphia's Jack O'Brien knocked out Bob Fitzsimmons in the 13th round to earn the light heavyweight title.
1926 Rogers Hornsby, player-manager of the world champion St. Louis Cardinals, was traded to the New York Giants for second baseman Frankie Frisch and pitcher Jimmy Ring. Cardinals owner Sam Breadon had become peeved at Hornsby for demanding a three-year contract worth $50,000 and for being tossed out of the locker room earlier in the season.
1966 Seattle was rewarded with an NBA franchise for the 1967-68 season, which expanded the league to 11 teams.
1972 Hall of Famer Gabby Harnett died at the age of 72 in Park Ridge, Illinois.
1973 Montreal's Henri Richard notched his 1,000th point with an assist en route to a 2-2 stalemate with Buffalo.
1980 NBC tried the first-ever NFL broadcast without broadcasters and just the sound of the game. The game featured the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. The Jets won, 24-17.
1981 Winnipeg's Doug Smail tied an NHL record for fastest goal, scoring just five seconds into the game and helping the Jets beat the St. Louis Blues, 5-4.
1983 Montreal's Guy Lafleur recorded his 500th goal, as the Canadiens dumped the New York Rangers, 6-0.
1985 North Carolina set and NCAA record with 18 blocked shots in an 87-55 victory over Stanford. - New York Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin assisted on a Mike Bossy tally for his 916th career point, eclipsing that of the legendary Bobby Orr for most points by a defenseman.
1987 D. Wayne Lukas-trained Tejano became the first juvenile millionaire when he won the Hollywood Futurity with Laffit Pincay Jr. aboard.
1994 Ivan Lendl retired at the age of 34 after a 17-year career.
2002 Jon Frazier collected 271 total yards and scored two touchdowns to lead 15th-ranked Western Kentucky to its first-ever I-AA championship with a 34-14 victory over top-ranked McNeese State.
