1918 Jack Dempsey KO'd Carl Morris in 14 seconds of their heavyweight bout in New Orleans.
1940 Joe Louis KO'd Al McCoy in the sixth round of the Boston Garden to retain his heavyweight title.
1945 The Cleveland Browns eeked out a 15-14 victory over the Washington Redskins for the NFL championship.
1966 Dick Tiger defeated Jose Torres in a 15th round decision to capture the heavyweight championship of the world.
1967 Philadelphia Warriors center Wilt Chamberlain scored 68 points in a 143-123 win over the Chicago Bulls.
1972 The Miami Dolphins defeated the Baltimore Colts in the final game of the regular season and became the 1st NFL team to win all 14 of their regular season games. The Dolphins set an NFL rushing record with 2,960 yards.
1973 O.J. Simpson became the first NFL player to gain 2,000 yards rushing in a season. Simpson led his Buffalo Bills to a 34-14 drubbing of the New York Jets and finished the season with 2,003 yards.
1984 Yogi Berra replaced the recently-fired Billy Martin to become the New York Yankees manager for the second time.
1990 Houston QB Warren Moon recorded the second greatest passing day in NFL history, throwing for 527 yards, to lead the Oilers past the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-10.
1994 The Oklahoma Sooners signed Howard Schnellenberger as their football coach to a 5-year, $125,000 per year deal, while Oklahoma State signed Colorado assistant head coach Bob Simmons to a 5-year, $110,000 per year deal.
2000 Georgia Southern won its second straight I-AA college football championship defeating Montana, 27-25.
