Birmingham, England (Sportsbooks) - West Bromwich Albion has decided to fire coach Gary Megson after he informed the club earlier Tuesday that he would not re-sign after this season. Megson's contract runs out on June 30, 2005, and he told West Brom through a letter Tuesday that he did not wish to re-sign. West Brom accepted this as a letter of resignation and "believes it is now in the best interests" of the club that Megson no longer remain in charge. Assistant coach Frank Burrows will serve as the interim manager. Megson has been critical of his players recently, and West Brom has slumped to 16th place in the Premiership. After a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace Saturday, Megson aired his frustrations. "That performance in terms of the way of going about a football match was neglectful," said Megson. "Training last week was symptomatic of the game. We can't turn it on and off like a tap and the players just thought they could just turn it on from kickoff. "That is our worst-ever performance in my time here. I can't justify it or find any silver lining." Megson took over West Brom in March 2000 and led the club into the top flight in 2002. The club was relegated that year, but earned promotion once again for the 2004 season. "The board would like to acknowledge Gary Megson's major contribution during his term as manager and wishes him well in the future," the club statement read. The Baggies host Chelsea on Saturday.
