Moscow, Russia (Sportsbooks) - Leonid Tyagachev, the head of the Russian Federation's Olympic Committee, has officially resigned Thursday following the country's performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Russia finished sixth in the medal count with a total of 15 and suffered a disappointing loss in the men's hockey quarterfinals to host country Canada. The athletes garnered just three gold medals overall. "I have long been working in sports. Many years (I) have led the Olympic Committee of Russia, and (I am) always responsible to the task. At the Olympics in Vancouver (we) were not displaying results that we expected," Tyagachev said in a statement. Tyagachev has been the head of the Russian Olympic Committee since being elected to that post in 2001.
