East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbooks) - Wide receiver David Tyree, whose amazing catch in Super Bowl XLII ranks as one of the indelible images in league history, was released on Saturday as the
New York Giants pared their roster to the 53-player maximum.
Tyree, who toiled in relative obscurity before making the catch that helped the Giants stun the Patriots on Feb. 3, 2008, missed all of the following season due to a knee injury. He was attempting to make the roster as a backup receiver and special-teamer this season, but fell victim to a numbers crunch at his position.
Also released on Saturday were safety Vince Anderson, wide receiver Shaun Bodiford, defensive lineman Anthony Bryant, quarterback Rhett Bomar, defensive tackle Jeremy Clark, defensive linemen Maurice Evans, defensive lineman Robert Henderson, defensive lineman Tommie Hill, linebacker Kenny Ingram, safety Travonti Johnson, offensive lineman Cliff Louis, running back Allen Patrick, offensive linemen Terrence Pennington, safety Sha'reff Rashad, offensive lineman Orrin Thompson, quarterback Andre' Woodson, cornerback DeAndre Wright and fullback Dwayne Wright.
Notables among that group include the quarterbacks Bomar and Woodson, who were vying to become the team's No. 3 quarterback; Pennington, a former starter with the Buffalo Bills, and DeAndre Wright, the team's sixth-round choice in the 2009 draft.
In other moves, the team placed defensive tackle Jay Alford (knee) on season- ending injured reserve, placed linebacker Michael Boley on the reserve/suspended list, and dealt tight end Michael Matthews to the New England Patriots in exchange for a conditional draft choice.
Boley is suspended for the regular season opener for a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.
Matthews played in all 37 regular season and postseason games the past two years, catching a total of eight passes while serving primarily as a blocker.
The Giants will open their season on Sept. 13, when the Washington Redskins visit the Meadowlands.
