San Diego, CA (.com) - Larry English's disappointing five-year tenure with the San Diego Chargers has come to a close, with the team releasing the former first-round pick just prior to the start of training camp.

The Chargers chose English, an outside linebacker out of Northern Illinois, with the 16th overall selection of the 2009 NFL Draft. The 2008 MAC Player of the Year failed to make a significant impact with the team, however, never recording more than three sacks in a season and starting just nine games.

English played in just nine games with five starts last season before landing on injured reserve with a biceps tear. The 28-year-old had 18 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks prior to being sidelined.

The Chargers released English to clear a roster spot for rookie center Khalil Wilkes, signed to a three-year contract on Tuesday.
