49ers give Kaepernick six-year mega extension

Santa Clara, CA (.com) - What a difference a few years make.

Colin Kaepernick, who was a backup quarterback two seasons ago, now has the money to prove that he's developed into one of the NFL's top-10 quarterbacks.

San Francisco made Kaepernick its franchise quarterback on Wednesday, signing him to a mega six-year contract extension through the 2020 season.

The deal will pay Kaepernick up to $126 million, with $61 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com. Kaepernick was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him under $1 million.
