New York, NY (.com) - New York Giants safety Will Hill was handed a six-game suspension by the NFL Friday as a repeat offender of the league's policy for substances of abuse.

It's the third suspension in three seasons for Hill, who emerged as a starter in New York's secondary in 2013 and recorded career bests of 77 tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown in a late-year win at Detroit.

Hill was also forced to sit out the first four games of last season for a similar violation, and received a four-game ban as well during the 2012 campaign for testing positive for Adderall.

The 24-year-old also had off-field issues during his time at the University of Florida which caused him not to be taken in the 2011 draft. Hill signed with the Giants the following offseason following a brief stint in the Arena Football League.

Hill, who started 10 games for New York a season ago, will be eligible to return after the Giants' game against Philadelphia on Oct. 12. He will be allowed to participate in training camp and preseason games.
