Davie, FL (.com) - The Miami Dolphins announced the signing of safety Louis Delmas on Monday.

Delmas started 15 games for the Detroit Lions last season, racking up 64 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and eight passes defensed.

"I am happy to announce the addition of safety Louis Delmas to the Miami Dolphins and I would like to welcome him back to South Florida," Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey said in a statement. "He is a leader on and off the field and has a proven track record of playmaking that will benefit the entire defensive unit."

The 26-year-old Florida native spent his first five seasons with the Loins after being drafted by the team in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Over 65 career games, all but one as a starter, Delmas has totaled 331 tackles, five sacks, six interceptions and 24 passes defensed.

Also Monday, the Dolphins released cornerback Dimitri Patterson.

Patterson, 30, appeared in six games (four starts) with the Dolphins last season and posted 19 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defensed.

Over eight NFL seasons, Patterson has recorded 176 tackles, nine interceptions and 35 passes defensed in 78 games (20 starts) with Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Washington.
