Seahawks lead Broncos 36-8 after 3 quarters
East Rutherford, NJ (.com) - Percy Harvin returned the opening second-half kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and the Seattle Seahawks had a 36-8 lead over the Denver Broncos going into the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVIII.
The NFC-champion Seahawks are trying to win their first Super Bowl title in their second appearance in the game.
Harvin's return came after the Seahawks scored 16 points off Denver turnovers for a 22-0 lead at halftime.
They made it 23 points off turnovers after Demaryius Thomas' fumble led to Jermaine Kearse's spinning, tackle-breaking touchdown catch for a 36-0 Seattle lead.
Seattle's top-ranked defense has smothered Peyton Manning and the top-ranked Denver offense, which was the first in NFL history to score 600 points in the regular season.
Manning was 30-of-40 for 241 yards with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Thomas at the end of the third quarter, which was followed by a two-point conversion.
But he has thrown two interceptions. One of them led to Marshawn Lynch's 1- yard touchdown run and the other was returned 69 yards by Malcolm Smith, both in the second quarter.
The Seahawks didn't have their "12th Man" -- the nickname of their spirited home fans -- but they've honored them by scoring 12 seconds into each half.
Before Harvin's return to start the second half, Seattle scored the Super Bowl's fastest-ever points when the ball was snapped over Manning's head and into the end zone for a safety on the game's first play from scrimmage.
The score came two seconds sooner than Devin Hester's 92-yard kickoff return for Chicago to begin Super Bowl XLI. Manning's Indianapolis Colts beat the Bears in that game.
Manning is attempting to become the first starting quarterback to lead two different franchises to a Super Bowl win. He is playing on the field his brother Eli calls home as quarterback of the New York Giants.
The Broncos are 2-4 in six previous Super Bowls, winning back-to-back titles in 1998-99 behind quarterback John Elway, who is now the team's executive vice president of football operations.
