East Rutherford, NJ (.com) - The ball was snapped over Peyton Manning's head and into the end zone on the first play from scrimmage of Super Bowl XLVIII.

Things didn't go much better on his team's next two possessions as the Seattle Seahawks took an 8-0 lead over Manning's Denver Broncos after the first quarter Sunday.

The Seahawks took a 2-0 lead on the fastest score in Super Bowl history -- a safety 12 seconds in after Broncos center Manny Ramirez snapped the ball over Manning's head from the 8-yard line.

Manning, set up in the shotgun, was walking toward the line and appeared to be calling out protection when Ramirez hiked it. Denver running back Knowshon Moreno recovered the ball in the end zone.

Seattle receiver Percy Harvin, back after missing the NFC title game with a concussion, had a 30-yard run on a reverse to help set up Steven Hauschka's 31-yard field goal for a 5-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

On Seattle's next possession after a Denver three-and-out, Russell Wilson dropped a pass into Doug Baldwin's hands for a 37-yard gain down the left sideline to the Denver 6.

But the Seahawks settled for a 33-yard field goal after Broncos linebacker Nate Irving knocked the ball out of Jermaine Kearse's hands on a third-down pass into the end zone.

Manning was then intercepted by safety Kam Chancellor on third down, setting Seattle up deep in Denver territory heading into the second quarter.

The NFC-champion Seahawks are trying to win their first Super Bowl title in their second appearance in the game.

Manning is attempting to become the first starting quarterback to lead two different franchises to a Super Bowl win.

The Broncos are 2-4 in six previous Super Bowls, winning back-to-back titles in 1998-99 behind quarterback John Elway, who is now the team's executive vice president of football operations.
