Sheppard eyes starting role with Vikings Headlines 04/22/2010

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -New Minnesota Vikings cornerback Lito Sheppard says he is excited to join the team in large part because he has an opportunity to win a starting job.

Sheppard signed a one-year deal on Wednesday to give the team depth in the secondary. With starting cornerback Cedric Griffin recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, Sheppard has designs on getting plenty of playing time early in the season.

Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbooks) - The Minnesota Vikings reached a deal with free agent cornerback Lito Sheppard on Wednesday. Sheppard was released by the Jets in March after recording 30 tackles and one interception in 11 games last year, his only season in New York. The 28-year-old University of Florida product played his first seven seasons in Philadelphia and was selected to a pair of Pro Bowls in 2005 and 2006. "Lito is a great guy who fits what we are looking for," Vikings head coach Brad Childress said.

Sheppard's deal was done on Wednesday. He will help fill in for starter Cedric Griffin, who is recovering from surgery on his left knee after an injury suffered in the NFC championship game.

Sheppard played seven seasons with Philadelphia, the first four while Vikings head coach Brad Childress was the Eagles' offensive coordinator. Sheppard was picked for the Pro Bowl twice. He has 19 career interceptions.

NEW YORK (AP) -The Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints will host the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL season opener in a rematch of their thrilling NFC championship game that was decided in overtime.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the Vikings-Saints matchup for Thursday night, Sept. 9, during a web chat on NFL.com Tuesday.

The league will release the entire regular-season schedule later Tuesday.
