Lions Release CB Bly, 19 more NFL Football 09/04/2010
Allen Park, MI (Sportsbooks) - Cornerback Dre' Bly was among the players released by the Detroit Lions on Saturday, as the team pared its roster to the 53-player NFL maximum. Bly, an 11-year NFL veteran who returned to Detroit in the offseason after having previously played four years with the team (2003-06), could not withstand what has become a crowded cornerback rotation in the Motor City. A second-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 1999, Bly has previous experience with the Rams (1999-2002), Broncos

Notables among that group include Afalava, who started 13 games for the Bears at strong safety last season; Angulo, who has appeared in 27 NFL games since breaking into the league in 2003, most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008; and Shaw, who set a team record with 30 special-teams tackles in 2009. The Bears open their regular season next Sunday, when they play host to the NFC North rival Detroit Lions.

Englewood, CO (Sportsbooks) - Wide receiver Brandon Stokley was placed on season-ending injured reserve Saturday, with the Broncos also cutting 10 players and dealing for Detroit Lions tight end Dan Gronkowski to reduce the roster to 53 players. Stokley, an 11-year NFL veteran who caught 108 passes with the Broncos over the past three seasons (2007-09), had been hampered in the preseason by an injured groin. The last five Super Bowl winners went a combined 12-8 in the preseason, ranging from 1-3 to 3-1; nothing significant there.

NEW YORK (AP) - Detroit Lions rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been fined $7,500 by the NFL for his roughing-the-passer penalty on Cleveland quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Suh grabbed Delhomme's face mask and twisted it. He wrapped his arms around the quarterback's head and slammed him to the ground in an exhibition game last Saturday. Suh says he didn't know Delhomme had thrown the ball before he hit him.

Suh played at Nebraska and was the second overall pick in the April draft.
